Changes in Blood Coagulation after Splenectomy

  • Chapter
Diagnosis and Therapy of Malignant Lymphoma

Summary

The changes in blood clotting characteristics after splenectomy affect mainly the platelet system. The changes are quantitative as well as qualitative. The changes in plasmatic coagulation on the other side are comparable to those after surgical operations of similar severity. It is remarkable that a marked rise in Factor VIII activity, which lasts several days, occurs after splenectomy. This makes a major influence of the spleen on Factor VIII synthesis appear very unlikely.
