Abstract

In 1971 a number of papers were published by Greenwald and Herbst [1, 2, 3], which may be regarded as the first evidence of an intrauterine, i. e. prenatal, carcinogenic effect of chemical substances in humans. In approximately 14 females between 15 and 22 years of age, the mothers of whom had been treated with synthetic estrogens (diethylstilboestrol) during the first trimenon of pregnancy, the authors observed adenocarcinomas of the vagina. This supports the assumption that malignant growths can also be induced transplacentally in humans by a single or repeated application of chemical substances.
