Tumours in a Tropical Country

Part of the book series: Recent Results in Cancer Research ((RECENTCANCER,volume 41))

Abstract

Carcinoma of the penis is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in Ugandan men. It usually develops in the coronal sulcus and the incidence is closely correlated with standards of genital hygiene. Circumcision protects against the development of this tumour e0ven if carried out at puberty. Tumours of the testis are uncommon in Africans and tumours of young adults appear to be particularly rare. The correct incidence of prostatic cancer is essentially unknown. The true age of older patients and the true population of older people are both difficult to determine. The high frequency of urethral stricture in many parts of the country may make diagnosis difficult. The histological and clinical features of prostatic tumours appear to be similar to those found in other countries.
