Zusammenfassung

The carcinogenic hazard of heavy exposure of tissues to ionising radiation was clearly recognized within a few years of the first use of roentgen-rays and of the discovery of radioactivity (Frieben, 1902; Porter and White, 1907; Rowntree, 1908). Tumours were seen to develop in areas of skin which had been grossly damaged by irradiation, and the distribution of such tumours over the body surface did not correspond with the usual distribution of skin tumours occurring spontaneously.

This review is based upon analyses undertaken on behalf of the British Medical Research Council.
