Abstract
In the unanaesthetised dog with either an innervated (Pavlov) or a denervated (Heidenhain) gastric pouch or with a gastric fistula, PGE1 infused intravenously reduces the gastric secretory response to either food, histamine, pentagastrin or deoxyglucose (Fig. 1). At an infusion rate of 1 µg/kg/min, PGE1 totally inhibited secretion induced by either food (23 g of canned meat), histamine (1 mg/hr infused intravenously), pentagastrin (75 µg/kg/min infused intravenously). or 2-deoxyglucose (200 mg/kg injected intravenously). At 0.45 µg PGE1/kg/min there was 60% inhibition. For any dose, maximum inhibition was reached 30 to 45 minutes after the start and was maintained throughout the infusion (Robert, Nezamis and Phillips, 1967, 1968).
