Abstract

Actinomycosis is a chronic suppurative infection which occurs in man and in domestic animals such as horses, cattle and swine. It is characterized by the formation of abscesses and multiple draining sinus tracts, by peripheral spread to contiguous tissues, and by the presence in pus of firm, yellowish tangled mycelial masses which are referred to as “sulfur granules”. These represent colonies of the etiologic agent Actinomyces israelii; they may reach a diameter of 2 mm and are a prime diagnostic feature of actinomycotic infection (Figs. 1,5).
