Summary
Species, used for examination of adrenergic and antiadrenergic drugs belong to different mammalian systems. The distributionpattern of the adrenergic receptors in the intraocular muscles varies qualitatively and quantitatively from species to species. Results obtained from animal experiments are not transferable to man due to the species’ specificity.
A double adrenergic innervation of the “ciliary-body-gland” is postulated: stimulation of the α-adrenergic receptors induces a decrease, stimulation of the β-adrenergic receptors an increase of aqueous humor production. The synergism between the β-receptors of the ciliary muscle and the “ciliary-body-gland” is indicative. Therefore, the systematic therapy of the hypertonia or hypotonia bulbi with adequate adrenergic or antiadrenergic agents is possible.
