Evaluation of Glucosamine in HSV-Keratitis Therapy

Summary

Studies with cell monolayers and the use of an animal model for HSV 1 infection demonstrated clearly that glucosamine decreases the multiplication of infectious virus. There is evidence that during the treatment with glucosamine, new glucosamine-tolerant cells are formed in which the virion assembly is affected. However, the viral protein synthesis still occurs so that the immunological anti-HSV 1 reaction is induced. Use of glucosamine in clinical trials shows that glucosamine is a potential antiviral drug.

Zusammenfassung

In vitro-Versuche mit Monolayer-Zellkulturen sowie Tierversuche mit einer HSV 1-Keratitis zeigen eindeutig, daß Glucosamin in der Lage ist, die Herpesvirusvermehrung zu reduzieren. Es scheint so zu sein, daß sich während der Glucosamin-Behandlung neue Glucosamin-tolerante Zellen herausbilden, in denen der Zusammenbau des Virus verhindert wird. Die virale Proteinsynthese geht aber dennoch weiter, und entsprechend wird auch eine antivirale Immunreaktion induziert Die Anwendung von Glucosamin in ersten klinischen Versuchen zeigt, daß es ein potentes Virustatikum ist.
