Interference Between Ocular Herpes and Allergic Diseases. An Epidemiologic Approach

Summary

An epidemiological survey, limited to questions concerning personal clinical history of allergy, was carried out on 100 patients suffering from ocular herpes and on 100 control subjects. Ocular herpes was twice as frequent in atopic individuals. Similarly, the tendency towards Mucocutaneous herpes and ocular herpes was more frequent in allergic subjects than in non-allergic. However, there was no correlation between the type of ocular herpes and allergy. The atopic area would seem to favour the herpetic infection, without doubt due to a defect of cell mediated immunity which is perhaps influenced by prostaglandins.
