Abstract

Cytokines are defined as secreted regulatory proteins that control the survival, growth, differentiation and effector function of tissues. Cytokines encompass those families of regulators known as growth factors, colony-stimulating factors, interleukins (ILs), lymphokines, monokines and interferons (IFNs). Measuring cytokines is an important facet of understanding the complex interactions of the immune response mediated by these multifunctional, peptide, T cell products. For example cytokines regulate the activation, growth and differentiation of many cell types and have been implicated in diseases such as arthritis, allergy and leukemia (Aria 1990). In some cases, cytokines are involved in the pathology of the disease, while in other cases they may be used clinically as drugs, such as IFN, granulocyte/macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and erythropoietin. There is a broad range of both cell culture assays available for cytokines (Whiteside 1994; Aggarwai 1991) and commercial ELISA kits for detecting cytokines (Ledur 1995; Mire-Sluis 1995).
