Basic Principles and Applications of Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Principles and Practice ((PRINCIPLES))

Abstract

In the beginning of microscopy the technique used was incident light microscopy. But soon the researcher changed the method and produced very thin preparations for observation in transmitted light. Without any doubt, microscopes are the most important tool in “cell” biology. It was Hooke who introduced the still recent term “cell” in biology when he carried out research with plant material in the year 1667. This discovery laid the foundations for the understanding of the mechanisms of life.
