Summary
Physical methods for the prevention of thromboembolic complications are established, but to date no studies have examined the use and effectiveness of these methods in patients immobilized in plaster casts. We evaluated two physical methods (the AV-Impulse system and active forefoot movements) for their influence on venous blood flow in the femoral and popliteal vein in 12 lower limbs of six healthy individuals immobilized in below-knee plaster casts by duplex ultrasonography. Both methods increased the venous blood flow significantly (p<0.05), maximum blood flow and blood flor per minute. These results show the clinical impact for thromboembolism prophylaxis of these methods in patients immobilized in plaster casts.
