Abstract

The catalytic activities of a series of metallocene lanthanide(II) complexes such as racemic Me2Si(2-SiMe3-4-tBu-C5H2)2Sm(THF)2, meso type Me2Si(Me2SiOSiMe2)(C5H2-tBu)Sm(THF)2 and C1 symmetric Me2Si[2,4(SiMe3)2C5H2][3,4-(SiMe3)2C5H2]Sm(THF)2 were examined for polymerization of ethylene and 1-olefins. As a consequence, catalytic activity for polymerization of ethylene increases in the order of meso > racemic > C1 symmetric complex. Only the racemic complex exhibits good catalytic activity for polymerization of 1-olefins. The catalysis of lanthanide(III) metallocenes was also explored by using racemic Me2Si[2,4-(SiMe3)2C5H2]2SmCH(SiMe3)2 and C1 symmetric Me2Si[2,4-(SiMe3)2C5H2][3,4-(SiMe3)2C5H2]SmCH(SiMe3)2, and the C1 symmetric complex was found to exhibit good catalytic activity for polymerization of ethylene and 1-olefins while the racemic complex is inert towards the polymerization of ethylene and 1-olefins.
