Am 11. Mai 1895 konsultiert eine 33jährige Patientin Dr. Beatson am Glasgow Cancer Hospital. Sie überbrachte einen Brief von ihrem Hausarzt mit u.a. folgenden Inhalt:

„My own opinions is that nothing can be done for her, but as she is a woman of great courage, you might have a look at her for my sake, and perhaps you can order her something in the way of dressing.“
