Abstract
The development of artificial ventilation at the beginning of this century constituted a major progress in medical care. Initially, mechanical ventilation was mainly applied during surgery. Later, during the poliomyelitis epidemics in the fifties large numbers of patients were ventilated outside the operation room, at first by hand and subsequently by mechanical ventilators. Nowadays, mechanical ventilation is a standard technique to combat imminent or overt respiratory insufficiency.
