Abstract
If delayed-acting insulin is injected twice daily, either NPH, lente or ultralente insulins can be used for basal substitution. We have also studied proinsulin in an intraindividual comparative study and found it to be very well-suited for this purpose. Unfortunately, the production of proinsulin was discontinued. Its controversial cardiovascular side effects have never been investigated under controlled conditions in type I diabetic patients.
