Atmospheric Ozone as a Climate Gas

Abstract

Twenty-five years of regular ozone soundings at Uccle were corrected for all known instrumental effects. Over the period 1969 through May 1994 year-round statistically significant trends in tropospheric ozone are found that vary between approximately 1.6% near the surface and 1% per year above the mixed layer. Year-round negative ozone trends are found above 18 km and at the level of the secondary ozone maximum in the lower stratosphere during late winter and spring. The highest ozone increase is observed in the boundary layer during summer, at weather conditions with easterly winds it amounts to about 3% per year. Photochemical ozone produetion in the boundary layer as observed from the ozone soundings at Uccle mainly occurs between May and September. This phenomenon is observed more frequently in recent years as compared to the 70’s. The contribution (in terms of percentage) of stratospheric intrusions associated with the polar front to the tropospheric ozone budget, as observed from the ozone soundings, shows an annual Variation with a maximum in June and July.
