Evaluation of Penile Microcirculation

  • Chapter
Vascular Andrology

Abstract

Penile arterial and venous circulation has been widely investigated, using various techniques including echo Doppler, echo color Doppler, photo- plethysmography, angiodynography, cavernosometry, arteriography, and isotope wash-out techniques. Penile microcirculation, on the other hand, has been less extensively investigated both in physiological and in pathological conditions. The introduction of laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) in the past decade has provided a useful means to evaluate micro- circulation in normal and pathological conditions. LDF is also used to evaluate the effects of vasoactive drugs and the superficial skin microcirculation in patients with vasculogenic erectile dysfunction. The technique is extremely easy to handle and has become very popular; however, the interpretation of results is sometimes rather critical.
