Abstract
In this paper, a number of fundamental concepts concerning the inverse gravimetric problem are discussed. The inverse gravimetric problem is analyzed in the most general way, i.e. independent of any particular choice of the mathematical description of the problem prior to the inversion. The difference between the geodetic and the geophysical purpose for solving the inverse gravimetric problem and the corresponding solutions is explained. The information about the generating density distribution contained in different types of gravity data is analyzed. This analysis is performed for the theoretical case of continuously distributed and errorless gravity measurements, and for the gravity data which are discretely distributed and contaminated by the measurement error.
