Abstract
This chapter describes the context in which MMS was defined, the rationale for its introduction and gives the position of MMS in the hierarchy of communication protocols. The MAP, Mini-MAP and Profibus networks are then briefly presented. We indicate the benefits that the user can get in using these networks.
