Abstract

New bone formation can proceed either through intramembranous or endochondral ossification. They differ both in the stages of tissue metaplasia from mesenchyme to bone, and in the rate newly formed woven bone remodels into lamellar bone, the former process being more efficient in rapidly producing functional bone, capable of full weight bearing.
