Abstract

The importance of behavioural adaptations for the survival of desert invertebrates has been pointed out several times in the preceding chapters. Through their behavior, many species are able to avoid the physical stress of hot and dry environments by seeking sheltered microhabitats. In addition to behavior, physiological adaptations are required to avoid the risk of desiccation, while growth and development require modifications the life cycles of many species. Behavioural adaptation alone is not sufficient for survival, and an array of survival strategies has been adopted by most desert species.
