Abstract
Ten separate coal districts have so far been recognized in Venezuela. Those in western Venezuela, near the Colombian border, are of Paleocene or Eocene age. Others in the northern part of the country near the Caribbean are of Miocene age. In the Guasare district, 20 coal beds have been identified with thicknesses from 0.5 m to 13 m. Coal is being mined from this district at the rate of about 700,000 MT annually, but plans call for a build-up to 6 million MT, all of which will be for export. Each of the other nine mining districts is described briefly.
