Abstract
The interaction between polarization excitations of condensed media and electromagnetic waves has attracted a lot of attention. This is because an electromagnetic wave travelling through a polarizable medium is modified by the polarization it induces and becomes coupled to it. This coupled mode of excitation is called a polariton. If the polarizable medium is identified, then the polariton is qualified. Thus, for example, in the case of an electron plasma the coupled modes are called plasmon-polaritons.
