The UK Approach to the Regulation and Evaluation of Novel Foods Produced by Biotechnology

Abstract

For the past ten years the UK has had in place procedures for the premarketing clearance of novel foods and novel food processes. Under these procedures the consumer safety of novel foods and foods produced by novel processes is evaluated by the UK Advisory Committee on Novel Foods and Processes (ACNFP). The terms of reference of the Committee are: “To advise Health and Agriculture Ministers of Great Britain and the Heads of the Departments of Health and Social Services and Agriculture for Northern Ireland on any matters relating to the irradiation of food or to the manufacture of novel foods or foods produced by novel processes, having regard where appropriate to the views of relevant expert bodies.”
