Diagnosis of unruptured intracranial aneurysms with three-dimensional CT angiography

Abstract

The usefulness of three-dimensional CT angiography (3D-CTA) for the diagnosis of unruptured cerebral aneurysms was compared with that of MR angiography (MRA) and digital subtraction angiography (DSA).

Thirty-three patients in whom unruptured cerebral aneurysms were suspected on the basis of CT, MRI, or MRA investigations were included in this study. CT was performed with a bolus injection of non-ionic contrast medium. The presence of 41 cerebral aneurysms was confirmed by 3D-CTA in 24 of the 33 cases. In the remaining 9 cases, no aneurysm was shown by 3D-CTA. 3D-CTA revealed more detailed features of aneurysms and the vessels involved than did MRA and DSA. It revealed even small aneurysms with a diameter of 1 mm, and it gave more useful information about surgical approaches to large aneurysms. We conclude that 3D-CTA is an effective contribution to the screening for and diagnosis of cerebral aneurysms.
