Abstract
Intraluminal blood flow velocity measurement is a new invasive Doppler technique providing functional information during angiography or interventional procedures in dural sinuses. It can be used easily and safely without significant loss of time during the procedure. Flow velocity in dural sinuses, in our patient group, ranged between 8 and 45 cm/s in nondraining veins. In vessels draining an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) blood flow velocity was remarkably higher: up to 134 cm/s in the straight sinus. The highest velocity in dural arteriovenous fistulae (DAVF) was found in one patient to be 165 cm/s in the transverse sinus. Flow pattern was usually found to be laminar and only remarkably turbulent in proximal arterialised sinuses and direct at fistula sites. Pulsatility was evident in nonarterialised as well as in arterialised sinuses. Information about flow velocity and flow pattern of the dural sinuses is of complementary value to angiography. Ongoing studies should demonstrate the usefulness of this technique in the management of patients undergoing endovascular treatment of brain AVMs or AVF.
