Recent Progress Using the Anstadt Cup for Direct Mechanical Ventricular Actuation

The non-blood contacting biventricular assist device that has come to be known as DMVA (Direct Mechanical Ventricular Actuation), or the Anstadt Cup, was first conceptualized in 1945. In this year, Dr. George L. Anstadt, upon witnessing the death of his father from cardiogenic shock following a myocardial infarction, was inspired by an illustration in Life magazine of an iron lung. He envisioned a cardiac assist device that would be applied atraumatically through a low pressure suction, and actuate the ventricles both in systole and diastole by the application of external positive and negative pressures (Fig. 1). Dr. Anstadt undertook the initial experiments in DMVA at the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine, San Antonio, Texas from 1960 to 1962 [1].
