Extracorporeal Respiratory Support in Acute Respiratory Failure

Abstract

Mechanical ventilation with high minute ventilation, high levels of peak inspiratory pressures, high levels of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP), and high inspiratory fractions of oxygen represents the most common ventilatory management of patients with severe adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). However, mechanical ventilation does not offer the proper environment for the healing of the lungs, since both pulmonary [1, 2] and systemic complications [3, 4] have been attributed to positive-pressure breathing.
