Music Perception and Preference in the Course of Mental Diseases

It is the intention to present some results of a study which investigated whether mental diseases can influence perception and preference of musical meaning. The estimation of musical expression, by which is meant the impression of musical messages, is guided not only by the characteristics of music, its composition or performance, but also by individual factors. Some studies have demonstrated that the connotation depends, for example, on personality traits (Cattel and Anderson, 1953b), present condition, mood, concentration (Cattel and McMichael 1960; Nielzen and Cesarec 1982b) etc., and not least on mental illnesses (Nielzen and Cesarec 1982c; Cattel and McMichael 1960). A psychiatric disease impairs affective, cognitive, motoric or psychomotoric functions, which are especially characterized by the kind of illness. One is compelled to suppose that psychopathological symptoms influence musical processing field.
