The Primary Use of Chemotherapy for Operable Breast Cancer: Does Systemic Therapy Make Surgery Superfluous?

Part of the book series: Recent Results in Cancer Research ((RECENTCANCER,volume 140))

Abstract

Primary chemotherapy, in combination with radiotherapy and/or surgery, has been used in the treatment of advanced carcinoma of the breast for several decades. The term often used for this type of treatment is “neoadjuvant chemotherapy.” More recently, less advanced cases of breast carcinoma have been treated by primary chemotherapy and many studies have been published describing optimistic results; however, very few randomized controlled investigations have appeared, and questions such as: “Should surgery remain the initial treatment of ‘operable’ breast cancer?” remain (Kurtz 1991).
