Abstract
Preliminary measurements suggest that infrared irradiation of liquid crystal molecules of energy E=hν suppresses single electron charging effects in such molecules, when they are used as the central electrode between an STM tip and a conducting substrate. It is observed that single electron charging effects are suppressed only when the magnitude of the applied bias, |V|, between tip and substrate is such that |V|<hν/e. Possible origins of this effect are discussed in terms of electronic transition by photons and the energy applied to make electrons tunnel into the molecule. This effect provides further confirmation of electron confinement within such molecules.
