Microbiology and Sources of Pancreatic Pathogens in Acute Pancreatitis

  • Conference paper
Facing the Pancreatic Dilemma

Abstract

Pancratic infection develops in 5% –10% of patients with acute pancreatitis [1]. It is associated with multiple system organ failure and is now the leading cause of death from acute pancreatitis [2]. Increased understanding of the microbiology and sources of pancreatic pathogens may lead to improvements in management. Recent work has highlighted typical pathogens, identified likely sources, shown probably routes of spread and provided an insight into host factors which increase the risk of pancreatic infection and the sepsis syndrome.
