Abstract

During critical illness, a complex hierarchy of inflammatory and cardiovascular changes is activated during the host response to diverse non-infectious and infectious stimuli. These produce stereotypic alterations in body temperature, heart rate, respiratory frequency, and circulating polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN), findings collectively termed the systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) [1]. Such expressions of inflammation during SIRS represent one end of a spectrum in which progressive derangements in the regulation of mediator production, PMN activation, endothelial function, and cardiovascular performance culminate in multiple organ failure (MOF) [2].
