Fibrin Sealant in the Treatment of Infections in Orthopedics

Book cover Fibrin Sealing in Surgical and Nonsurgical Fields

Abstract

We describe our experience in treating open fractures and infected prostheses with fibrin sealant (Tissucol, Immuno, Vienna). The high percentage of good results (85%) is an indicator of the validity of this treatment. The method was used in infections in orthopedic surgery by using fibrin sealant with antibiotics. The cases consisted in 25 severe open fractures of the lower limbs and 18 infected total hip and knee replacements with a follow-up of at least 1 year. We show in detail the various aspects of this method and present three cases as examples.
