Abstract
Before introducing Diversitas, the IUBS-SCOPE-UNESCO Programme on Biological diversity, in particular the role of international scientific organisations in identifying research needs and opportunities, it is important to recall how and why it was made possible for the topic of biological diversity, of vague and diffuse interest among scientists, to become, within less than a decade, a major theme of interest to the general public as well as to the policy and decision makers worldwide.
