Abstract

Pericardial effusion is one of the most frequent complications following cardiac surgery. Echocardiography is very useful for detecting pericardial effusion and the signs of tamponade, such as compression of the right atrium and diastolic collapse of the right ventricle. The following figures show various degrees of pericardial effusion after cardiac surgery. The volume of the pericardial effusion is not predictive of the occurrence of cardiac tamponade.
