Abstract
This chapter discusses the impact of the EC program for 1992 on the organization of production in manufacturing firms and the derived macroeconomic consequences for a small open economy. Flexibility is the key concept in this chapter. On the micro-level it is argued that the intensified competition due to “EC 1992” is forcing firms to adopt more flexible production technologies. The type of micro-level flexibility — i.e., whether it can be characterized as being dynamic or static — determines the scope for flexibility at the macro-level.
