Thermal Characteristics of Turbulent Vortices in the Wake of a Circular Cylinder
Thermal characteristics of turbulent vortices in the near/intermediate wake of a circular cylinder have been explored using data from an array of 16 cold wires aligned in the direction of the mean shear. The data have been examined either on an instantaneous basis or conditionally via a detection method which identifies local temperature maxima. For small distances downstream of the cylinder, the conditionally averaged temperature distributions within the vortices are approximately exponential. This information has been used in conjunction with an Oseen-like vortex model to calculate mean and rms temperature profiles across the wake. There is reasonable agreement between calculation and measurement.
