Summary

Thanks to the electrochemical oxidation in alkaline solution at room temperature, oxygen atoms were intercalated in ceramic materials, thin films and crystals of La2CuO4 (or La substituted). Physical properties of these materials show that at least two and probably three phases are formed with different compositions in oxygen (the δ value). The role of these additional oxygen atoms is discussed in terms of both steric and electronic effects. Electrochemical studies show that the electroactive species formed during the oxidation process, likely O−, have a rather high diffusion coefficient. On the basis of the existence of a mixed valence of oxygen in these materials, we propose that the O− species are the mobile species thanks to a coupling with the conduction electrons via the electron transfer O → metal.
