Abstract

Low-index surfaces of ZnO have been studied through ARUPS, LEED and TDS. The electronic properties of the clean ZnO (0001)Zn, (000\(\bar 1\))O and (10\(\bar 1\)0) surfaces will be reviewed. Time-dependent changes of electron affinity and work function will be explained through oxygen diffusion from the surface into the bulk. Adsorption of D2O, NO, CH3OH, C6H6 and Xe has been studied in detail. C6H6 forms an ordered monolayer of a complicated orientational order. The polar molecules exhibit the strongest bonding to surface Zn sites.
