Services in Switzerland

Abstract

Trading activities can be divided into wholesale and retail trade; in Switzerland, their combined value added accounted for no less than 13.5% of GDP in 1985. More than half of this figure (7.3%) is wholesale trade. Nonetheless, this report focuses on the other 6.2% of GDP due to retail trade. The reason for neglecting one of the two areas was to keep this project within manageable proportions; the reason for selecting retail trade lies in the fact that retail trade is far more subject to regulation than wholesale trade. Wholesale trade, having been fully exposed to international competition for a long time, should have little to fear and much to gain from the creation of a Single market.
