Abstract
The demand for transportation is a derived demand. Only in exceptional circumstances (tourism) does it give rise to utility immediately. In the case of freight, it is the forwarding agent who shapes this derived demand in an important way. Acting as the organizer of the shipment, he in fact determines the modal split, i.e. the allocation of transportation demand among road, rail, water, pipeline and air.
