Abstract
Management consultancy and engineering consultancy clearly belong to the domain of services. Both groups of activities provide information to decision makers, enabling them to better deal with issues that are important to the economic survival of their firm or the political standing of their agency. They thus impact on characteristics of persons rather than goods. This is not to deny that classical mechanical engineering used to deal with machine-machine interactions; today, however, process design in engineering cannot be performed without reference to issues of manageability and control, terms that point to the role of personal characteristics in man-machine interactions.
