Abstract

During the last 20 years Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) and Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) emissions from fossil fueled power plants have been significantly reduced in many industrialized countries. However only limited progress has been made up to now regarding the abatement of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) and NOx emitted from other stationary and from mobile sources. Recently the German Umweltbundesamt (UBA, 1988) has predicted that the emissions of VOC in Germany (West) will be reduced by 37–44% from 2.45 Mio. to/a (1986) down to 1.36–1.55 Mo. to/a in 1998. On the other hand, it has been estimated that a European-wide 80–90% reduction of VOC and NOx emissions will be required in the future to tackle efficiently the ground level ozone pollution.
