Mucosal Immunity in Immunodeficiency

Abstract

The human mucosal membranes cover an enormous surface area, perhaps 300–400 m2. The defence of these vulnerable barriers depends principally on a local adaptive humoral immune system, in addition to a variety of natural, innate protective mechanisms (Brandtzaeg 1984, 1989a, b; Brandtzaeg et al. 1987a, 1989a; Hanson and Brandtzaeg 1989). Adequate co-operation between the specific and non-specific mucosal defence factors is a prerequisite for health, because the various mucosae are favoured as a port of entry by most infectious agents, allergens and carcinogens. The neonatal period is quite critical in this context, as the newborn is immediately exposed to numerous microorganisms, foreign proteins and chemicals.
