Zusammenfassung
Das Prostatakarzinom (PK) ist die häufigste Karzinomerkrankung bei Männern jenseits des 50. Lj. und die zweithäufigste Todesursache bei Männern in dieser Altersgruppe. In den letzten Jahren nahm das Interesse zu, die Bedeutung des Screenings für das Prostatakarzinom zu definieren. Die Einführung des prostataspezifischen Antigens (PSA) sowie die transrektale Sonographie (TRUS) in Verbindung mit einer sorgfältigen digitalen rektalen Untersuchung (DRE) trugen dazu bei, daß dieses Karzinom früher entdeckt werden kann. Verbesserungen der Operationstechnik bei der radikalen retropubischen Prostatektomie verringerten die Morbidität und Mortalität und erhöhen offensichtlich die Überlebensrate von Patienten, die sich dieser Operation unterziehen.
