Abstract

Helicobacter pylori colonizes gastric epithelial cells: in 1988 [8] we described the fibrillar NLBH as the putative colonization factor Saitoh et al. [16] demonstrated that H. pylori binds to N-acetylneuraminyllactose-ceramide isolated from human gastric mucosa. The work reported here represents the first step in elucidating the molecular composition of the NLBH, i.e., cloning of the adhesin subunit of the NLBH. Subsequent work will be required to clone and identify additional gene products which are involved in expression of the native structure on the surface of H. pylori.
