Abstract

Recurrence may be local or distant, local recurrence being more common after surgery for rectal cancer. The commonest site for distant recurrence is in the liver, but occasionally the lungs, bone or skin may be affected. Once diagnosed recurrence is difficult to treat and rarely curable.
