Abstract
The main task of a traffic control center (TCC) is the centralized monitoring and control of traffic flow in urban and extraurban areas via technical equipment. The TCC cyclically gets measured values such as traffic volumes, speeds and occupancy rates through detectors which are installed within the road network. To reach the best possible traffic control on the basis of these data they have to be analysed.
Methods of artificial intelligence offer a variety of possibilities to derive complete and qualitative reliable traffic information from the detected data. The paper on hand points out the methods for the checking of the plausibility of detector data, for the spacial prognosis of traffic volumes and for the analysis of the traffic situation. The identification of characteristic traffic situations as the basis of various traffic control measures corresponds to the way experts act. Therefore the basic values will be described with linguistic variables (fuzzification), for instance : traffic density could be low, medium, high or very high. Also the turning and feeding flows will be linguistic. A set of rules describing the traffic behaviour is build and new values are computed with approximate reasoning. The results of the propagation through the whole network are fuzzy sets (linguistic terms) for each link which describe the traffic state of the link.
